Ƒ

From Free net encyclopedia

The letter Ƒ (minuscule: ƒ) is a letter of the Latin alphabet, based on the italic form of f; or on its regular form with a descender hook added.

Contents

Regular

It is used in writing the Ewe language in a straight form to represent a voiceless bilabial fricative (IPA: Template:IPA), as distinct from the letter F, which represents a voiceless labiodental fricative. Compare Ʋ, which is the equivalent voiced sound.

Italic

The minuscule italic ƒ is also used as an abbreviation for florin, gulden and guilder. It can be found as italic in non-italic fonts.

The lowercase italic ƒ is also used in mathematics for function notation:

ƒ(x)=πx²

Use on computers

Older fonts and character encodings included only the minuscule form for its use as an abbreviation. Unicode includes both the majuscule and the minuscule. Font families that support languages using the African reference alphabet will have the minuscule f with a hook in its straigt form in the regular font. Because of its origin, the italic ƒ (f with a hook) will often look exactly like the italic f (f) in some typefaces.
