spot news reporting(previously breaking news reporting: Robert D. McFadden of New York Times. For his highly skilled writing and reporting on deadline during the year.
spot news photography (previously breaking news photography: Charles Porter IV, a free-lancer. For his haunting photographs, taken after the Oklahoma City bombing and distributed by the Associated Press, showing a one-year-old victim handed to and then cradled by a local fireman.
commentary: E.R. Shipp of New York Daily News. For her penetrating columns on race, welfare and other social issues.
criticism: Robert Campbell of Boston Globe. For his knowledgeable writing on architecture.
editorial cartooning: Jim Morin of Miami Herald
