Prior to local government amalgamations, Altona and surrounding suburbs were part of the City of Altona municipality. Many residents still use the name Altona to refer to Altona & surrounding suburbs which include: Altona North, Altona Meadows & Seaholme. The area has many shopping facilities such as Central Square, Pier St., Borrack Square & Altona Gate.

Major industry includes Petrochemical production. This was a major environmental concern to residents in the 1970's & 1980's, however strict environmental controls & local projects involving industry, government & environmental groups have reduced these concerns & have cleaned up coastal areas that were once neglected by industry & government.
