Androscoggin County is a county located in the U.S. state of Maine. As of 2000, the population is 103,793. Its county seat is Auburn6. Bates College is located in the Androscoggin city of Lewiston, Maine.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,288 km² (497 mi²). 1,218 km² (470 mi²) of it is land and 70 km² (27 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.42% water.

Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 103,793 people, 42,028 households, and 27,192 families residing in the county. The population density was 85/km² (221/mi²). There were 45,960 housing units at an average density of 38/km² (98/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 96.98% White, 0.66% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. 0.95% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 42,028 households out of which 30.90% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.60% were married couples living together, 10.80% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.30% were non-families. 28.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.00% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.91.
In the county the population was spread out with 23.90% under the age of 18, 9.10% from 18 to 24, 29.70% from 25 to 44, 22.90% from 45 to 64, and 14.40% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 94.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.20 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $35,793, and the median income for a family was $44,082. Males had a median income of $31,622 versus $22,366 for females. The per capita income for the county was $18,734. 11.10% of the population and 7.50% of families were below the poverty line. 13.80% of those under the age of 18 and 11.00% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
