Image:Fwray.jpg Ann Darrow is a fictional character from the 1933 movie King Kong and its 2005 remake. She is a beautiful actress with whom the giant ape King Kong falls in love. In the original film, Ann is played by Fay Wray; in the 2005 remake, she is played by Naomi Watts. The 1976 remake features a very similar character who is renamed "Dwan" (played by Jessica Lange). The character of Ann Darrow never appears in any other films or media of Kong.

1933 movie

In the 1933 film, Darrow travels to Skull Island with love interest, first mate Jack Driscoll and filmmaker Carl Denham. There, she is kidnapped by natives who wish to offer her as a sacrifice to King Kong. Kong falls in love with her and kidnaps her himself, her sacrifice costume is a pink dress while barefoot. She is rescued by Driscoll and his comrades, only to be kidnapped once more by King Kong when the company transports him to New York and puts him on display. In the film's finale, Ann and King Kong are forced to the top of Empire State Building by the military and Kong is finally killed. Here, Ann Darrow is a portrayed as a woman of that era would be, and while her character may have had little dialogue compared to the 2005 remake's Ann Darrow, she made effective use of her screen time as well as could be presented and was not just there primarily in the film as a damsel in distress, but was a woman of her time, living in fear of an unknown giant ape who she never could quite understand.Image:Annkingkong.jpg

2005 movie

In the 2005 remake, her character is given more detail: she is a struggling vaudeville actress and bonds with Kong by entertaining him with her comic acting skills; in addition, she eventually comes to sympathise with Kong, gaining the great ape's trust and understanding, unlike the character in the original, who spends most of her time screaming and fainting while in Kong's clutches. Her sacrifice costume was a rag with 1930s pyjamas while barefoot. When the two are trapped atop the skyscraper at the climax, she tries desperately to prevent him from being killed, much like Dwan in the 1976 version, but to no avail, even at one point hanging from a busted service ladder high above New York.
