It was first distributed in Wichita, Kansas in 1994, was distributed across the United States by 1997, and as of 2003, had become the United States' top-selling bottled water brand in measured retail channels. The water is mainly driven from municipal tap water that goes through an extensive purification process that includes charcoal filtration, reverse osmosis and ozonation. Aquafina is sold in 12-ounce, 500-mL (16.9-ounce), 20-ounce, 24-ounce, 1-liter, and 1.5-liter bottles.
In India, Aquafina, manufactured by PepsiCo India Holdings Private Ltd, is one of the most popular bottled water brands.
PepsiCo later produced Aquafina Essentials, bottled water with various vitamins added, available in five different flavors: Tangerine Pineapple, Citrus Blend, Watermelon, Grape, and Wild Berry.
According to the bottle label, "Aquafina's state-of-the-art HydRO-7 purification system consistently removes substances most other bottled waters leave in."
