BBC Five Live Sports Extra is an additional radio service provided by the BBC via DAB Digital Radio and the digital satellite, digital terrestrial and digital cable television services in the UK. It is not available via normal analogue radio. It is also streamed online, however due to rights restrictions coverage of some events is not available online. Some content is available online but restricted to UK users, however this restriction can be circumvented by using an open proxy server.
It is used to provide an additional sports commentary service when the main radio channel BBC Radio Five Live is already being used.
It has transmitted coverage of the Baseball World Series since 2004. It is also the digital radio home for Test Match Special which provides full commentary without the shipping forecast provided by the Radio 4 long wave coverage.
Each year during Wimbledon Sports Extra provides extra court commentary for the first week of the tournament.
Broadcasts began at 2.30pm on 2 February 2002. Juliette Ferrington introduced the first programme - commentary of Manchester United against Sunderland.
