Baldwin County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 44,700. The county seat is Milledgeville, Georgia6.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 693 km² (268 mi²). 669 km² (258 mi²) of it is land and 23 km² (9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.38% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 44,700 people, 14,758 households, and 9,843 families residing in the county. The population density was 67/km² (173/mi²). There were 17,173 housing units at an average density of 26/km² (66/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 54.17% White, 43.38% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 1.01% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 1.36% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 14,758 households out of which 31.00% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.90% were married couples living together, 18.20% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.30% were non-families. 25.60% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.80% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the county the population was spread out with 21.70% under the age of 18, 14.50% from 18 to 24, 31.20% from 25 to 44, 21.90% from 45 to 64, and 10.60% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 117.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 119.70 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $35,159, and the median income for a family was $42,736. Males had a median income of $31,227 versus $22,718 for females. The per capita income for the county was $16,271. 16.80% of the population and 11.80% of families were below the poverty line. 22.80% of those under the age of 18 and 13.00% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
