It is also the highest peak within eastern North America (if one defines North America as Canada and the United States). The mountain was named in 1969 after Canadian anthropologist Charles Marius Barbeau (1883-1969).

Barbeau Peak was first climbed in 1967 by British alpinist Geoff Hattersley-Smith (before it was named). The second ascent was by an eight-man Canadian team in 1981. Subsequent ascents have been made in 1992, 1998, 2000 and 2002, though as of 2006 only seven successful summits have been attained.
