The title of Earl of Romney was first created in the Peerage of England in 1689. It became extinct in 1704, and was created again in the Peerage of the United Kingdom in 1801.

The Earl bears the subsidiary titles of Viscount Marsham (1801) in the Peerage of the UK and Baron Romney (1716) in the Peerage of Great Britain, and is an English baronet (1663).

The family seat is Moat House, near Maidstone, Kent.
