Viscount Scarsdale
From Free net encyclopedia
Viscount Scarsdale and Baron Scarsdale are titles in the Peerage of the United Kingdom and Peerage of Great Britain, respectively.
The first member of the Curzon family to hold a hereditary title was John Curzon, was who created a baronet in both Nova Scotia (1636) and England (1641). The Barony was created in 1761 for Sir Nathaniel Curzon, 5th Baronet, of Kedleston. The Viscountcy was created in 1911, along with the titles of Earl Curzon of Kedleston and Baron Ravensdale for George Nathaniel Curzon, eldest son of the fourth Baron Scarsdale. On his appointment as Viceroy to India in 1898 he was created Baron Curzon of Kedleston in the Peerage of Ireland to enable him to potentially return to the House of Commons (as Irish peers did not have an automatic right to sit in the House of Lords). In the event he never returned to the House of Commons and following his return from India was elected an Irish Representative Peer in 1908. Earl Curzon of Kedleston succeeded his father as 5th Baron Scarsdale in 1916, and was further created Marquess Curzon of Kedleston in 1921. The Curzon of Kedleston titles became extinct at his death, but the Barony of Scarsdale and (thanks to a special remainder) the Viscountcy passed to his nephew, who became 6th Baron and 2nd Viscount Scarsdale. The Barony of Ravensdale passed under a different remainder to his daughter, Mary Irene.
