Beekmantown, New York

Beekmantown is a town located in Clinton County, New York, USA. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,326. The town name is that of William Beekman, an original landowner.

The Town of Beekmantown is on the east border of the county, north of the City of Plattsburgh.

History

The town was first settled around 1783. During the War of 1812, some light fighting occurred in the town in 1814.

The town was formed in 1820 from the Town of Plattsburgh. Part of Beekmantown was lost in 1854 when the Town of Dannemora was established.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 180.3 km² (69.6 mi²). 156.6 km² (60.5 mi²) of it is land and 23.6 km² (9.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 13.12% water.

The east town line, defined by Lake Champlain is the border of Vermont.

The Northway (Interstate 87) and US Route 9 pass through the town.

There were 2,210 housing units at an average density of 14.1/km² (36.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.63% White, 0.71% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. 1.01% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 2,004 households out of which 36.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.2% were married couples living together, 7.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.3% were non-families. 18.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the town the population was spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 9.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 100.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $42,555, and the median income for a family was $45,915. Males had a median income of $34,716 versus $22,040 for females. The per capita income for the town was $18,792. 12.9% of the population and 11.0% of families were below the poverty line. 18.6% of those under the age of 18 and 5.8% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
