Bennington is a town located in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,401.

History
The town was formed from parts of Deering, Francestown, Greenfield, and Hancock, New Hampshire. It was named to commemorate 1777's Battle of Bennington, a three-day battle fought in New York near Bennington, Vermont. Bennington, Vermont in turn derived its name from colonial governor Benning Wentworth.
The town was incorporated in 1842. The first census, taken in 1850, recorded 541 residents.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 29.3 km² (11.3 mi²). 28.6 km² (11.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.30% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 1,401 people, 552 households, and 356 families residing in the town. The population density was 48.9/km² (126.7/mi²). There were 635 housing units at an average density of 22.2/km² (57.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.00% White, 0.07% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 1.21% from two or more races. 0.64% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 552 households out of which 34.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.0% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.5% were non-families. 26.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.18.
In the town the population was spread out with 28.6% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 33.5% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 8.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 97.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.8 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $46,150, and the median income for a family was $52,153. Males had a median income of $34,063 versus $26,734 for females. The per capita income for the town was $19,675. 7.9% of the population and 8.4% of families were below the poverty line. 10.3% of those under the age of 18 and 13.2% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
