He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he received an undergraduate degree, then went to Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and earned a Master in Fine Arts in 1994. A year after graduation, he started working on Broadway.

Crudup began acting in films such as 1996's Sleepers and 1997's Inventing the Abbotts. Since then, he has been in many films but regularly returns to stage acting.

He's been the voice of MasterCard "Priceless" commercials since 1997, making his first appearance in an ad in 2005.

Crudup dated actress Mary Louise Parker 1996-2003, with whom he had a son named William Atticus (born January 7, 2004). He received negative publicity when they broke up because she was seven months pregnant with William Atticus and he was seen with actress Claire Danes. Danes and Crudup both confirmed they were dating in 2004.

Billy Crudup starred in the production of The Pillowman, also starring Jeff Goldblum, on Broadway in New York, which closed on September 18 2005.
