Brocton, New York

Brocton is a village located in Chautauqua County, New York, USA. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,547. The name was derived by combining parts of the names "Brockway" and "Minton" (two locally prominent families).
The Village of Brocton is within the Town of Portland.
The Lakeview Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility, a state prison is located by the village.

History
The community was first settled around 1813. The Village of Brocton was incorporated in 1894. Brocton used to be named "Salem" after the town in Massachusetts, but was later renamed "Brocton.'

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²). 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 1,547 people, 623 households, and 414 families residing in the village. The population density was 345.3/km² (893.1/mi²). There were 670 housing units at an average density of 149.5/km² (386.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 96.38% White, 0.65% African American, 1.29% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.65% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. 1.94% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 623 households out of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.6% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.5% were non-families. 29.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the village the population was spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 88.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.9 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $27,500, and the median income for a family was $36,328. Males had a median income of $27,059 versus $22,214 for females. The per capita income for the village was $13,901. 13.2% of the population and 11.4% of families were below the poverty line. 18.5% of those under the age of 18 and 6.3% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
