The district of Bronte in Sicily lies near Mount Etna.
History
In 1520 Charles V united the twenty-four hamlets of the surrounding area, which expanded the town of Bronte. Mount Etna, a nearby volcano, has erupted and nearly destroyed the town three times, in 1651,in 1832, and finally in 1843.
In 1799, King Ferdinand III, created Bronte as a Duchy, and rewarded Horatio Nelson, (who had large land holdings in the area), with the title of Duke, because of his naval victory against the French.
Geography
Bronte is located on the island of Sicily. It is slightly northwest of Mount Etna, on the side of the valley of the Simeto river. It is about 20 miles (approx 30 kilometers) west of the coast
Modern Bronte
Bronte is mostly reliant on farming for its economy. A major part of its farming is pistachio nuts. It is currently owned by Italy.
