Buffalo is a town located in Putnam County, West Virginia, along the Kanawha River. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,171.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.3 km² (1.6 mi²). 3.7 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 14.55% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 1,171 people, 490 households, and 338 families residing in the town. The population density was 320.7/km² (828.4/mi²). There were 559 housing units at an average density of 153.1/km² (395.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.18% White, 0.09% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 2.39% from two or more races. 0.94% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 490 households out of which 28.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.9% were married couples living together, 10.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.0% were non-families. 28.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.91.

In the town the population was spread out with 22.0% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $26,481, and the median income for a family was $35,938. Males had a median income of $29,519 versus $16,106 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,005. 17.6% of the population and 12.8% of families were below the poverty line. 24.1% of those under the age of 18 and 12.3% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
