Template:Chicagoland municipality Buffalo Grove is an affluent village located in Northwest suburban Cook and Lake counties in Illinois, United States. The town was named for Buffalo Creek, which was itself named for bison bones found in the area. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 42,909.

Geography

Buffalo Grove is located at 42°9'59" North, 87°57'48" West (42.166332, -87.963391)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 23.9 km² (9.2 mi²). 23.8 km² (9.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.22% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 42,909 people, 15,708 households, and 11,655 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,802.7/km² (4,666.9/mi²). There were 16,166 housing units at an average density of 679.2/km² (1,758.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 88.70% White, 0.76% African American, 0.06% Native American, 8.43% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.91% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. 3.32% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. Although statistics are not shown, Buffalo Grove has a large Jewish population.

There were 15,708 households out of which 42.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.0% were married couples living together, 6.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.8% were non-families. 22.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.23.

In the village the population was spread out with 28.9% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 9.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 93.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.2 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $122,835, and the median income for a family was $138,188. Males had a median income of $93,107 versus $59,476 for females. The per capita income for the village was $49,696. 2.3% of the population and 1.3% of families were below the poverty line. 2.6% of those under the age of 18 and 2.2% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

Education

Four school districts and three high school districts serve Buffalo Grove. The majority of public high school students in Buffalo Grove attend the nationally acclaimed Adlai E. Stevenson High School. Most others attend Buffalo Grove High School. Buffalo Grove is home to St. Mary's grade school. In recent years, the school has witnessed a tremendous loss in student enrollment.

Those students residing in the Cook County portion of Buffalo Grove attend Buffalo Grove High School. Those in Lake County attend Adlai E. Stevenson High School. A smaller population of students also attend Wheeling High School.
