(Redirected from Campaign settings)

A campaign setting is usually a fictional world which serves as a setting for a role-playing game or wargame campaign. A campaign is a series of individual adventures, and a campaign setting is the world in which such adventures and campaigns take place. Usually a campaign setting is designed for a specific game (such as the Forgotten Realms setting for Dungeons & Dragons) or a specific genre of game (such as Medieval fantasy, or outer space/science fiction adventure). There are numerous campaign settings available both in print and online. In addition to published campaign settings available for purchase, many game masters create their own.

Warhammer, Chill, and other role-playing games contain their own dedicated settings. Dungeons & Dragons, GURPS, and other such rpg rules sets may be used in a wide variety of settings. The best known campaign settings tend to belong to the Medieval fantasy genre of role-playing game.

A small number of special campaign settings exist that fuse two or more genres of role-playing game. The unusual nature of these settings is often what attracts people to use them. Spelljammer and Infinite Worlds are two published sources that have special campaign settings. In Spelljammer, spacefarers use sailing ships to sail through air or space and to travel from world to world. In Infinite Worlds, Infinity Patrol agents travel to different alternate worlds, contending with hostile Centrum agents over control of those worlds and their resources.

Futuristic science fiction campaign settings often feature multiple worlds, and space ships. Some feature faster than light travel and have inhabited worlds in many habitable star systems.
