Central European University

From Free net encyclopedia

Central European University is a US-licensed and accredited university based in Budapest, Hungary. It states that its goal is to contribute to the development of open societies in post-Communist countries by education.

CEU was established in Prague, Czech Republic in 1991, when an idea of several Central European intellectuals received financial support from George Soros. The university moved to Budapest in 1996, following political pressure from the Czech government of Vaclav Klaus.

As of 2003, Central European University had 100 faculty and 926 students from 76 countries. It offers Master's and Ph.D programs in social sciences, law, business and mathematics. The official language used at CEU is English.

An undergraduate degree in business, jointly administered with Bocconi University of Milan, Italy, was first offered in 2005.

Soros has endowed CEU with a total of 420 million [1] (which includes €20 million dedicated to the business school). This is believed to be the third largest endowment in Europe, after Oxford University and Cambridge University.

The CEU Business School was established independently of CEU in 1988 as the International Management Center (IMC), and was the first institution behind the iron curtain to award American-style MBA degrees.
