The City of Carlisle is a local government district with city status in Cumbria, in North West England. It has a population of around 100,000.

Its main town is Carlisle.

The district was formed on April 1, 1974 by the merger of the previous city and County Borough of Carlisle, with the Border Rural District.

With an area of 1,040km², it is, technically, by area, the largest city in England. However, only a small amount of this area is urbanised.
