It is sometimes referred to as a Coatimundi, which is derived from Brazilian slang referring to lone adult male coatis.

Ring-tailed coatis are distributed throughout South America, reaching down to the Northern regions of Argentina.

Female coatis reach maturity at 2 years of age, and the lifespan in captivity is around 14 years. They have 2-6 young at a time, after a gestation period of 70-75 days.

The females live in social groups containing between four and sixty-four members. Adult males are usually solitary, but most groups contain one adult male almost year round.

Like all coatis, they primarily eat ground litter invertebrates and fruit. They have also been observed eating dead birds, small lizards, and frogs.da:Næsebjørn de:Südamerikanischer Nasenbär fr:Coati à queue annelée nl:Rode neusbeer pl:Ostronos rudy sv:Röd näsbjörn
