Eastman, Georgia

Eastman is a city located in Dodge County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,440. The city is the county seat of Dodge CountyTemplate:GR. The first Stuckey's store, now well-known throughout the South East United States, was founded in Eastman in 1937.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.2 km² (5.1 mi²). 13.2 km² (5.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.20% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 5,440 people, 2,154 households, and 1,318 families residing in the city. The population density was 411.8/km² (1,067.3/mi²). There were 2,418 housing units at an average density of 183.1/km² (474.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 60.28% White, 37.35% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.16% from other races, and 0.44% from two or more races. 1.80% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 2,154 households out of which 27.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.9% were married couples living together, 19.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.8% were non-families. 35.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.96.

In the city the population was spread out with 29.5% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 92.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $23,604, and the median income for a family was $30,500. Males had a median income of $27,292 versus $20,497 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,332. 23.5% of the population and 20.2% of families were below the poverty line. 33.1% of those under the age of 18 and 25.0% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
