Enjoy Yourself (Kylie Minogue album)

Release history

Written, arranged and produced by Stock, Aitken & Waterman, “Enjoy Yourself” was Minogue’s second album for PWL. Recording for the album began in February 1989 and continued in April and July of that year at PWL Studios in London, England.

Released on October 9, 1989, “Enjoy Yourself” went double platinum on its release in the UK selling more than 600,000 copies during its pre-sale. The album entered the UK album charts at number one and secured Top 10 entries in multiple countries including Australia, Belgium, Greece and Ireland. Just ten weeks after its release the album reached the one million sales mark in the UK. Even with its chart and sales success “Enjoy Yourself” did not exceed the phenomenal success of its predecessor, peaking at only number three in Australia and selling an estimated one million copies less than Minogue’s debut did the previous year.

Like its her debut album, "Enjoy Yourself" was high in bubblegum pop, but also included a handful of ballads. Some critics praised the album for its catchy pop music and called it “a good companion to her debut”Template:Ref, while others criticized it for sounding too much like her debut and for reusing the same dance-pop format again. Due to this and the criticisms from many critics questioning her talents, a change of music style and image was due as the album's promotion came to a close.

In 1990 the album was issued in the U.S. and Canada on the Geffen Records. In addition to the release of the album, the US also received a special alternate cover. Initial copies sold were also available in a long box packaging. "Enjoy Yourself" would be Minogue's last official album release in the USA until 2002's "Fever".

With the phenomenal success Minogue was experiencing in Japan, a special limited edition package was released with the album. In the package, a total of six postcards and two stickers were included with a specially designed box cover. Initial copies of the album sold in the UK included a free poster.

Chart performance

Released in North American in 1990, the album failed to chart in both Canada and on the Billboard Top 200 albums in the U.S..

Since its release an estimated seven million copies of the album have been sold worldwide, selling 1,200,000 copies in the UK and 280,000 copies in Australia. “Enjoy Yourself” has gone 4x platinum in both countries.

“Hand On Your Heart” was the album’s first official single, since “Especially For You” was released the previous year in 1988. Released in April 1989, the song was another hit for Minogue in the UK, debuting at number two, and reaching the top spot the next week.

“Wouldn't Change A Thing” was the second single from the album and was released in July 1989. Recorded during the February 1989 sessions, it peaked at number two in the UK and at number six in Australia.

“Never Too Late” was the third single released in October 1989. The title-track to the album, “Enjoy Yourself”, was originally planned as the follow-up to “Wouldn’t Change A Thing” but was replaced with “Never Too Late” at the last moment. The single debuted at number seventeen in the UK, ending Minogue’s string of Top 10 single debuts, but managed to peak at number four the following week. In Australia the single peaked at number fourteen.

"Tears On My Pillow" was the final single from the album and was released in January 1990. The song was also included on The Delinquents film soundtrack. The song debuted at number two in the UK, giving Minogue her ninth consecutive Top 5 hit single in the UK, going on to peak at number one the following week. The single did not fair so well on the Australian charts, reaching a low number twenty. In Sweden the single was re-issued using the B-side "We Know The Meaning Of Love" as the A-side. The song peaked at number one on the Swedish singles chart.
