History
The band formed after the breakup of the Christian hardcore punk band Strongarm in 1998. Strongarm members Nick Dominguez, Chad Neptune, Josh Colbert, and Steve Kleisath) were among FSF's first band members. Another early FSF member, Steve Kleisath, was also with the band Shai Hulud, which has reformed with a new name: The Warmth of Red Blood.
Lead singer #1: Chris Carrabba
Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional fame was FSF's first lead singer. He remained with the band until the release of their first album, The Moon Is Down at which point he left to pursue Dashboard Confessional full time.
FSF remained on good terms with Carrabba, and even played a reunion show with him in 2005, featuring all songs from The Moon is Down in order.
Lead singer #2: Jason Gleason
In 2002, Jason Gleason of the hardcore band Affinity joined FSF as lead singer. In 2003, the second FSF album, How to Start a Fire, was released to much acclaim.
A year into Gleason's stint with Further Seems Forever, original member Nick Dominguez left the band to pursue a record label venture, Pop Up Records. He now runs that label with fellow FSF member, Derick Cordoba.
Early in 2004, the band had a falling out with Gleason, sparking a heated and much talked about Internet debate. In regard to what exactly happened, facts are scarce and rumors are plentiful, due to the band limiting its comments on the subject for personal reasons.
Lead singer #3: Jon Bunch
After several months of uncertainty, fear of bankruptcy, and fan support in the wake of Gleason's departure, the band decided to continue forward. "I think we stayed together because the music that is created by the rest of us is as much at the forefont of this band as the vocals are," explains FSF drummer Steve Kleisath of their decision to continue. "As long as we keep pushing our limits and progress in the writing of the music, then why should we call it quits because somebody else didn't want to be a team player with us?" Jonathan Bunch, of the popular indie band Sense Field, was added as the lead singer for the band. It was at the coaxing of their road manager that Bunch entered the picture. Bunch, whose own renowned band Sense Field had just disbanded after a career of over 10 years, was suddenly without a band for the first time since he was 15 years old. But it was his experience that created the seamless transition into his new vocal position.
"I would have to say it was all the years writing and playing music that prepared me for this record and this band," Bunch comments. "Of course I'm hoping FSF fans accept me, but I'll have to let the music speak for itself at this point. Judging from the emails from the fans, they are just so happy the band decided to continue and they want to be supportive which made me feel accepted from day one." In August of 2004, FSF released Hide Nothing, an album in which the instrumental parts were recorded while Gleason was still in the band. Bunch merged seamlessly with the band, and Further Seems Forever enjoyed both mainstream and Christian success.
Disbanding
In late 2005, FSF went on a long hiatus. In January 2006, the band posted a message on their website announcing that their shows in early 2006 through the United States and Canada would be their last as a band. During its existence, FSF gave more than a thousand performances. The individual band members proceeded to new jobs. There would be no new album project, but a compilation entitled Hope This Finds You Well was released by Tooth & Nail Records in April 2006. The band also indicated there would be a DVD release of videos and live performance scenes.
Band name origin
The name "Further Seems Forever" came about while the original group members were brainstorming about what to call themselves. Since they were always on the road away from their loved ones and the time it took getting back to them seemed like forever, "further seems forever" popped into their heads and just stuck.
