Göppingen

Template:Foreignchar Göppingen is a town in southern Germany, part of the Stuttgart Region of Baden-Württemberg. Capital of the district Göppingen. It is situated at the bottom of the Hohenstaufen mountain, in the valley of the river Fils.

History

The city was supposedly founded by an Alamannian leader called Geppo sometime in the 3rd or 4th century. A disastrous fire on August 25 1782 destroyed most of the town, but it was immediately rebuilt. The city developed into an industrial town during the 19th century. Today Göppingen is well known for its industry, for example Märklin and Schuler and for its sports club FrischAuf Göppingen, playing in the german first handball-division (Handball-Bundesliga). This cozy town offers a big city feeling in just a few blocks. Anything and everything can be found here, including the world's best ice cream. It has a one-of-kind atmosphere that someone must experience first hand to truly appreciate. But Beware! Like other German cities, if you plan to experience all it has to offer make sure you don't go on a Sunday or Saturday afternoon, because just about everything is closed. Trust me though, the inconvenience is incredibly worth it. If you have any qualms about German cuisine, merely go into any Gasthaus*, order the Maultauschen, and prepare to be eternally addicted. Such restaurants prove that german food is best served at home and many mimics in the U.S. merely do it an injustice.
