Gargamelle

From Free net encyclopedia

Image:CERN-20060225-24.jpg Gargamelle was a giant particle detector at CERN, designed mostly for the detection of neutrinos. With a diameter of nearly 2 meter and 4.8 meter in length, Gargamelle was a bubble chamber that held nearly 12 cubic meters of freon (CF3Br). It operated for many years at the CERN PS and SPS.

The name derives from the giantess Gargamelle in the works of Rabelais; she was Gargantua's mother.
