- In quantum field theory, ghosts are auxiliary fields needed in non-abelian gauge theories in order to deal with the gauge freedom. Although they are integer-spin fields, ghosts follow fermionic statistics. They are only artifacts of the theory, and do not correspond to real particles.
- In field theory, a ghost is field whose kinetic term is of the wrong sign, and would thus detrimentally represent a particle of negative energy.

- Ghost is also the name for a mind hosted/trapped into a computer by the mean of mind uploading. Resulting symbiotes are called ghosts computers or “ghostcomps”. These names had been popularized by David Pulver in his GURPS books, and more recently in the anime Ghost in the Shell. See infomorph.
- To ghost can also mean to stalk a group of people, capturing or killing them in swift hit and run attacks. An example of this can be seen in the movie Predator, where the alien Predator remains hidden as it stalks the soldiers through the forest, picking them off one by one in surprise attacks.
