Giovanni Leone

Template:Infobox President Giovanni Leone (Naples, November 3, 1908 - November 9, 2001) was Prime Minister of Italy from June 21 1963 to November 5 1963 and again from June 24 1968 to November 19 1968. He also served as President of the Republic from 1971 to 1978.
He became embroiled in controversy when, visiting Naples during an outbreak of cholera, shook the hands of the patients with one hand, and with the other, behind the back, made the corna. This act was well documented, as all journalists and photographers were right behind him. The gesture was interpreted especially as offensive for the patients.
He was forced to resign from his position as Prime Minister in 1968 amid a scandal involving Lockheed aeroplanes. In June 1978 a campaign against President Giovanni Leone, accused of minor bribery, was approved and finally supported by the Italian Communist Party (Partito Comunista Italiano or PCI), and resulted in the President's resignation.
