Greater Upper Marlboro, Maryland

Greater Upper Marlboro is an unincorporated census-designated place located in Prince George's County, Maryland, the census boundaries of which completely surround Upper Marlboro, the county seat. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 18,720.

Geography

Greater Upper Marlboro is located at 38°49'39" North, 76°45'4" West (38.827569, -76.751173)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 97.1 km² (37.5 mi²). 96.4 km² (37.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.75% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 18,720 people, 6,514 households, and 4,572 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 194.2/km² (503.0/mi²). There were 6,812 housing units at an average density of 70.7/km² (183.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 20.60% White, 75.50% African American, 0.31% Native American, 1.23% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.67% from other races, and 1.65% from two or more races. 1.81% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 6,514 households out of which 37.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.7% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.8% were non-families. 24.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.22.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 39.5% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 5.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 99.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.0 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $73,005, and the median income for a family was $81,666. Males had a median income of $47,857 versus $41,100 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $29,218. 3.4% of the population and 2.0% of families were below the poverty line. 4.4% of those under the age of 18 and 7.0% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
