Guilford is a town located in Chenango County, New York, USA. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,046.

History
The town was first settled around 1787. Guilford was formed from the Town of Oxford in 1813 as "Eastern." The name became "Guilford" in 1817. The town was called by an older name, "Fayette," for the early part of its history from the time it was in Tioga County.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 160.3 km² (61.9 mi²). 159.7 km² (61.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.36% water.
The east town line is the border of Otsego County, New York. The border is marked by the Unadilla River.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 3,046 people, 1,181 households, and 838 families residing in the town. The population density was 19.1/km² (49.4/mi²). There were 1,462 housing units at an average density of 9.2/km² (23.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.64% White, 0.66% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. 0.89% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,181 households out of which 31.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.0% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the town the population was spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 26.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 102.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.8 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $36,681, and the median income for a family was $40,801. Males had a median income of $31,528 versus $24,742 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,536. 12.0% of the population and 10.7% of families were below the poverty line. 15.2% of those under the age of 18 and 8.6% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
