Hampton, Georgia

Hampton is a city located in western Henry County, in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,857.

Atlanta Motor Speedway and the Tara Field airport are located 3 miles or 5km west of Hampton. A major air traffic control center which also covers the area around Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (the world's busiest) is also located here.

Hampton is also the city of license for WHTA FM 107.9, a move-in radio station originally in Macon, Georgia to the south-southeast. The tower/antenna/transmitter facility is actually west-northwest at Tyrone, Georgia, however.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 km² (4.3 mi²). 11.1 km² (4.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.69% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 3,857 people, 1,411 households, and 1,049 families residing in the city. The population density was 347.1/km² (899.6/mi²). There were 1,525 housing units at an average density of 137.3/km² (355.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 84.16% White, 13.38% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.67% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.57% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. 1.74% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,411 households out of which 41.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.3% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.6% were non-families. 19.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.12.

In the city the population was spread out with 29.8% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 35.4% from 25 to 44, 17.0% from 45 to 64, and 8.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 92.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $46,094, and the median income for a family was $48,310. Males had a median income of $37,750 versus $25,286 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,924. 5.0% of the population and 2.1% of families were below the poverty line. 1.8% of those under the age of 18 and 14.6% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
