Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,544 km² (596 mi²). 1,497 km² (578 mi²) of it is land and 48 km² (18 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.09% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 25,578 people, 10,426 households, and 7,444 families residing in the county. The population density was 17/km² (44/mi²). There were 12,807 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (22/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 94.91% White, 3.69% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 1.02% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 10,426 households out of which 29.70% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.30% were married couples living together, 10.10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.60% were non-families. 25.50% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.80% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.87.
In the county, the population was spread out with 23.10% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 26.60% from 25 to 44, 26.40% from 45 to 64, and 16.10% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.20 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $27,819, and the median income for a family was $34,157. Males had a median income of $28,357 versus $18,806 for females. The per capita income for the county was $15,598. 18.80% of the population and 14.60% of families were below the poverty line. 25.80% of those under the age of 18 and 17.80% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
