Harper County (standard abbreviation: HP) is a county located in the state of Kansas. As of 2000, the population is 6,536. The largest city and county seat is Anthony. Harper is a prohibition or dry county.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,080 km² (803 mi²). 2,076 km² (801 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.19% water.

As of the census² of 2000, there were 6,536 people, 2,773 households, and 1,807 families residing in the county. The population density was 3/km² (8/mi²). There were 3,270 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 97.23% White, 0.23% Black or African American, 0.83% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. 1.07% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 2,773 households out of which 27.70% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.30% were married couples living together, 6.90% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.80% were non-families. 32.10% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.90% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.90.

In the county the population was spread out with 24.70% under the age of 18, 6.60% from 18 to 24, 22.00% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 23.20% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 93.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $29,776, and the median income for a family was $39,866. Males had a median income of $27,869 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the county was $16,368. 11.60% of the population and 8.50% of families were below the poverty line. 15.70% of those under the age of 18 and 7.70% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
