Heather

Heather may be:

  • In botany, the plant Calluna vulgaris, or, more loosely, various species of the closely related genera Erica and Cassiope, low evergreen shrubs (also called "heaths"). The term is also used to describe land which is vegetated with these plants;
  • In apparel or textiles, interwoven yarns with a flecked grayish color, from their resemblance to a field of Heather;
  • A popular, usually female, forename, named after the plant – the film Heathers takes its title from this forename;
  • A well known print by William R Symonds;
  • Heather is also the name of a village in England.
  • In fairy lore, the Heather plant is considered to be a portal from our world to theirs.
