It begins at Interstate 85 mile 113 near Suwanee and continues northward to the north Georgia city of Gainesville.

I-985 is also known as the Sidney Lanier Parkway and is the unsigned reference route Georgia State Route 419. The highway was built in the mid 1960s as Georgia State Route 365; it was given the I-985 designation in 1985. I-985 and SR 365 currently multiplex—both routes end at the interchange with I-85 near Suwanee—but only the I-985 signs are displayed. I-985 also multiplexes with U.S. Route 23 from Exit 4 northward; US 23 was moved onto the interstate once it was completed.

The speed limit is 70 mph (113km/h) on I-985. After Exit 24, I-985 ends, the speed limit drops to 65 mph (105 km/h), and the freeway becomes a four-lane highway with at-grade interchanges.
