BRCA Genes-location of BRCA1 and BRCA2 on chromosomes 13 and 17.gif

In 1994 and 1995 scientists identified the genes BRCA1 and BRCA2, which are responsible for an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 cases of inherited breast cancer each year. Women with altered versions of these genes have a high probability of developing breast and ovarian cancer; men carrying BRCA2 also face an increased risk of cancer.
