Flag of the Brazilian state of São Paulo Template:PD-flag-national The flag of the State of São Paulo was conceived by the writer Julio Ribeiro and drawn by his brother-in-law, the painter Amador Amaral in 1888. It was meant to be the flag of the Republic for which they both fought for. It was chosen to be the flag of the state of São Paulo instead. It was made famous during the civil war (called to this day a "revolution" for reasons unknown) between São Paulo and the rest of Brazil in 1932. Julio Ribeiro was the son of an American from Virginia called George Vaugham. His father was the grandson of Samuel Vaugham, who was a personal friend of George Washington. His complete name was Julio Cezar Ribeiro Vaugham. This may account for the similarity with the American flag.
