The town is located on State Highway 3 16 kilometres southeast of New Plymouth, close to Mount Taranaki or Mount Egmont. It is at a latitude of Template:Coor dm. It is a typical small town servicing a mainly dairy farming region.

Inglewood was named by Philip Colin Threkeld for Inglewood Forest in Cumberland, UK. The settlement was founded in 1873, and its name rapidly progressed from Moatown to Milton before being renamed in 1875 to avoid confusion with Milton in the South Island.

Inglewood is sometimes referred to as "The Murder Capital of the New Zealand" due to several unrelated murders occurring over the last 20 years in an area of relatively small population.

Apart from murderers and All Blacks (John Major, Dave "Trapper" Loveridge, Chris Masoe), Inglewood has produced a leading contemporary artist, Michael Stevenson, who represented New Zealand at the 2003 Venice Biennale.[1]
