John Bannon

John Charles Bannon (born 1943) was the Labor Premier of South Australia between November 10, 1982 and September 4, 1992.
Political career
John Bannon had a rapid rise in South Australian politics. He entered parliament in 1977, was a minister by 1978, and was elected the Labor party leader after its defeat in the 1979 election. He then led Labor to victory at the 1982, 1985 and 1989 state elections.
One of his govermnent's major achievements were helping to bring the Australian Grand Prix to the streets of Adelaide, beginning in 1985, which was seen as a coup for South Australia. Another was securing the large submarine contract for South Australia in the mid 1980s.
Bannon resigned as premier in 1992 after his government presided over the collapse of the State Bank of South Australia, which left the state several billion dollars in debt.
