John Smith (Welsh politician)

John William Patrick Smith (born March 7, 1951) is Labour MP for the Vale of Glamorgan. Born in Penarth, Smith attended Penarth County Grammar School and then served for a while in the Royal Air Force. He was first elected to the seat in a 1989 by-election, lost it to the Conservatives in 1992 by a very narrow margin, and regained the seat in the general elections of 1997. He was re-elected in 2005 and served as a member of the Defence Select Committee in 2005.
