New Hanover Island, also called Lavongai, is a volcanic island, part of the Bismarck Archipelago within Papua New Guinea. Before the Territory of New Guinea became independent of the United Kingdom, Lavongai was part of the New Ireland subdistrict. Measuring some 460 square miles (1,190 km²), it had a population of 5000 in 1960.Template:PNG-geo-stub
