List of traditional regions of Slovakia

These traditional regions of Slovakia are mostly former counties of the Kingdom of Hungary, but also some other regions. Slovakia was part of the Kingdom of Hungary from the 11th/14th century onwards to 1918.

Counties
There were 20 (earlier 21) counties of the Kingdom of Hungary situated completely or partly in present-day Slovakia. After the creation of Czechoslovakia, they continued to exist till 1922. Most of them are still used informally for the corresponding territory.

- Mošoň (almost whole in present-day Hungary)
- Prešporok(Bratislava county) (almost whole in Slovakia)
- Gemer-Malohont (almost whole in Slovakia)
- Ráb (almost whole in present-day Hungary)
- Komárno county (southern part in present-day Hungary)
- Ostrihom county (southern part in present-day Hungary)
- Hont (southern part in present-day Hungary)
- Novohrad (southern part in present-day Hungary)
- Abov-Turňa (southern part in present-day Hungary)
- Zemplín (sountern part in Hungary, eastern in Ukraine)
- Uh county (eastern part of Ukraine).

Other traditional regions
There are also other regions in Slovakia, which do not correspond to historical counties:
- Kysuce - northern part of the former Trenčín county
- Záhorie - western part of the former Nitra and Bratislava county
- Podpoľanie - southern part of the former Zvolen county
- Zamagurie - northern part of the former Spiš county
- Zitny ostrov - part of former Bratislava and Komárno counties
