Back is the name of a village on the Isle of Lewis, in Scotland's Outer Hebrides.
The human back is the large posterior area of the body rising from the top of the buttocks to the back of the neck.
In anatomy, the back usually refers to the posterior side of the torso in humans and other primates. It is supported by the vertebral column.
In stringed musical instruments, the back is the lower or inner surface of the resonant cavity; the opposite one, nearer the strings, is the belly.
Back can also refer to the direction of travel exactly opposite the current movement.
Back in slang can mean to support, as in Backing the home team.
In many sports, a back is a player whose normal position is behind the forwards. In Rugby union, this means a player who is not involved in the scrum. At Football and Hockey and many other games it means a player who is defending the goal. It is often qualified with additional "measures", left back, quarterback, half back, full back, running back, and so on.
In the English town of Cambridge, The Backs (in the plural and with a capital letter) means the area behind the main colleges, alongside the River Cam.
A non-alcoholic drink consumed immediately after drinking a potent liquor, to dull the harsh taste of alcohol.
