"The Neptunes" is also the name of the fictional rock band in Hanna-Barbera's 1976 Saturday morning cartoon, Jabberjaw.

The Neptunes are Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, a duo of record producers based in their hometown of Virginia Beach, Virginia who created the sound for some of the most successful hip-hop artists (Nelly's "Hot In Herre", Jay-Z's "Change Clothes", Snoop Dogg's and Justin Timberlake's "Signs"), R&B artists (Kelis' "Caught Out There", Toni Braxton's "Hit The Freeway"), and pop icons (Britney Spears' "I'm A Slave 4 U", Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl", and half of Justin Timberlake's solo debut). They have also been in heavy demand as remixers, re-working tracks for the likes of Alicia Keys, Angie Stone, Limp Bizkit and The Rolling Stones.

The Neptunes' sound is a highly distinctive brand of off-kilter, stripped-down electronic funk with a heavy debt to Prince. Along with Timbaland they were the driving force behind many of the musical innovations of late-90s/2000s hip-hop, helping to introduce weirder, spacier sound effects, mid-eastern melodies, exotic percussion, and other idiosyncracies into the modern hip-hop mainstream.

The Neptunes are in a rock band, fronted by Pharrell, called N.E.R.D (which stands for "No one Ever Really Dies"), whose debut album, In Search Of..., achieved gold status in America.

In 2003, they released a self-credited album called The Neptunes Presents... Clones, featuring songs and remixes from various artists. This album topped the US Billboard 200 Albums Chart.

In 2004 The Neptunes won a Grammy for "Producer Of The Year, Non-Classical"

Their singles as N.E.R.D. include "Rock Star," "Lapdance," and "Provider." 2004's Fly or Die was an even bigger hit than their first album, and its debut single, "She Wants To Move", is possibly their biggest to date.

The Neptunes began the Star Trak record label, whose notable acts include rapper Snoop Dogg and the rap duo Clipse.

In 2006 The Neptunes were Nominated again for a Grammy in the category of "Producer Of The Year, Non-Classical"

The Neptunes are also working with singer/songwriter Brandy for her upcoming fifth album. On February 16, 2006, Pharell told MTV about working with the singer. He also declared it as "top secret stuff" and said "Watch out for Brandy"
