New Albany is a city located in Union County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,607. It is the county seat of Union CountyTemplate:GR.

Geography

New Albany is located at 34°29'32" North, 89°0'34" West (34.492237, -89.009448)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 44.3 km² (17.1 mi²). 44.2 km² (17.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.35% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 7,607 people, 3,049 households, and 2,027 families residing in the city. The population density was 172.3/km² (446.1/mi²). There were 3,329 housing units at an average density of 75.4/km² (195.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 63.98% White, 32.98% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.54% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. 2.83% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 3,049 households out of which 31.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.0% were married couples living together, 17.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.5% were non-families. 30.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 86.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $28,730, and the median income for a family was $38,750. Males had a median income of $29,457 versus $20,579 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,507. 18.0% of the population and 14.7% of families were below the poverty line. 22.0% of those under the age of 18 and 23.3% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
