Reviews: We Got This (Smog Veil 2003) If you don’t know who Rob Younger is, here’s a quick refresher. He could be called the godfather of Australian Punk. In the late-70’s he fronted what was perhaps Australia’s most famous Punk band ever, Radio Birdman. After that band broke up he led New Race featuring members of The Stooges and The MC5. By 1984 he had put together the first incarnation of The New Christs which have remained a fixture on the Aussie Indie music scene ever since. We Got This is their fifth, and according to the band, final studio album.

How to describe it? Loud. Polished. Honest. Those are a few words that come to mind. It’s definitely not a disappointment; from the very beginning Rob Younger had a passion for playing Michigan-style, no-bullshit, straight-up rock ‘n’ roll and this record is no different. It’s not very Punk, but this ain’t no Pop either. If real Rock music got played on the radio, it would be stuff like this. Fans of the New Christs will enjoy this album but people not yet familiar with the band are better off seeking out 1996’s Born Out Of Time (Lance Rock) that compiles a string of now-hard-to-find singles. Will this record sell well? Probably not, none of their records do. But that’s kind of beside the point. Rob Younger is better known as a producer these days anyhow. So why does he keep at it? In their press kit Rob says: “A lot of people go: ‘When are you going to stop playing? You don’t sell many records.’ If you’re not successful, a lot of people don’t see any justification for keeping on doing it. Like you’re a little bit pathetic somehow, and someone your age should have really knocked it on the head before this. But they don’t really know… without sounding pompous or anything… but it’s a calling in a way, isn’t it? Like writing or avenues of religion I suppose. I don’t want to ditch it. So fuck those people.” Yeah! Fuck them! -Scott Bass skillyb@hotmail.com
