New Day Rising
From Free net encyclopedia
New Day Rising is a 1985 album by the Minnesota band Hüsker Dü, released on SST Records. After their widely acclaimed double-album, Zen Arcade, saw them pushing hardcore punk to its limits by incorporating ideas and influences from a wide stylistic palette--including pop, jazz, and psychedelia--New Day Rising, in some ways, abandoned hardcore punk entirely and set the template for alternative rock for the next decade. While retaining the speed and aggression of earlier efforts, virtually all of the songs on New Day Rising exhibit strong pop sensibilities, songcraft, and structure, with all but three of the songs running over 2 minutes, and half of those running over 3 minutes. Guitarist Bob Mould's trademark miasma of distortion is still present, but with much of the harsh rawness of previous efforts abandoned in favor of more a more melodic sound. Some of the material sounds similar to the more midtempo efforts present on Zen Arcade.
The album is praised by many critics as the band's best album but most give that title to Zen Arcade. Present are a few of the group's most famous songs - "The Girl Who Lives on Heaven Hill" and "Celebrated Summer". "I Apologize" is also a fan favorite and it has been performed solo by Bob Mould on several occasions.
Like Zen Arcade, New Day Rising has become one of the most critically acclaimed albums of its day. Template:RS500 It is only Hüsker Dü album included.
At the very end of "Plans I Make", there is a short in-studio conversation, most likely between Grant Hart and Bob Mould which appears to have taken place immediately after the recording for the song finished. It is very quiet and almost inaudible.
Possibly Grant Hart: "He's gonna be mad cause we opened up the [inaudible]"
Bob Mould: "Now the [inaudible] came in. Who cares? Cause that's the last song on the album, it doesn't matter [guitar noise]."
