New Point (not Newpoint) is a town located in Decatur County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 290.

Geography

The town is located approximately one-half mile south of Interstate 74 at Exit 143. (State Highway 46 runs parallel to the town on its north side.) Utilities include city water and city sewage. At the present there is no natural gas piped to the town. The closest connection is 5.5 miles to the east on State Highway 46.

New Point is located at 39°18'34" North, 85°19'46" West (39.309546, -85.329376)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²). 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

The town is divided geographically by an active railway running east to Cincinnati, Ohio and west to Indianapolis, Indiana.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 290 people, 106 households, and 82 families residing in the town. The population density was 414.7/km² (1,061.8/mi²). There were 116 housing units at an average density of 165.9/km² (424.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.62% White, 0.34% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.34% from two or more races. 0.34% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 106 households out of which 38.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% were married couples living together, 10.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.7% were non-families. 17.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.04.

In the town the population was spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 33.1% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 116.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $39,583, and the median income for a family was $40,694. Males had a median income of $31,607 versus $28,750 for females. The per capita income for the town was $21,116. 7.3% of the population and 6.6% of families were below the poverty line. 12.0% of those under the age of 18 and 5.3% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

The community has a post office, a restaurant, two churches, two factories, a trucking company, a convenience store, several local businesses, and a volunteer fire department.

The town is governed by a board of elected officials.

The highlight of this town is the Day and Night Food Mart. It has insanely priced snack food items. There is also a large truckstop nearby. It sells items that appeal to truckers. Things such as samurai swords and life sized figures of the Blues Brothers.
