Nicanor Duarte Frutos was born on October 11, 1956, in Coronel Oviedo, Caaguazú. He is the current President of Paraguay. He was a son of a militant farm laborer of the Colorado Party (ANR-PC). He grew up during the Alfredo Stroessner dictatorship and was affiliated at Stroessner's Colorados Party at the age of 14 while attending high school in Coronel Oviedo.

In 1974, Frutos received a bachelor's degree in Sciences and Letters. He became a sports reporter and in 1977 he worked as a press chief for Radio Caaguazú. Four years later he wrote a column about political and social issues in the Ultima Hora" newspaper, where he continued until 1991. In 1984 he obtained a law degree from the Catholic University of Asunción and in 1989 a doctorate from the National University of Asunción. He was the first to adhere Reviving Traditionalism, a movement led by Ángel Roberto Seifart. Later he joined the ruling Colorado party, represented by Rodriguez. The preliminary candidate for the Colorados in December 1992 was the former minister of Integration Juan Carlos Wasmosy Monti who in August 1993 became the president of Paraguay. Wasmosy appointed Frutos as his Minister of Education and Culture. In 1996, a political controversy lead Frutos to step down the ruling party. In February of 1997 he resigned as minister and joined the Reconciliacion Colorada Movement (MRC).

In January of 2001, he had prepared his candidacy to the presidency of the governing party of ANR-PC for the period 2001-2004. On May 6, won the intramural elections, 47% affiliated people voted their preference of him. He obtained the nomination on December 22, 2002 as presidential candidate of his party for the national election of April 27, 2003. He was proclaimed president with the 37.1% of the votes, followed by Franco with the 24%, Fadul with the 21.3% and Sánchez with the 13.5% of the voters. He took possession of his presidency on August 15 for the presidential period 2003-2008 and he became the eleventh consecutive ANR-PC president. Duarte is married to María Gloria Penayo Solaeche and they have five children.
